Telephone Troubleshooting Tips

We have service technicians ready to respond and repair any telephone problems you may encounter. To report trouble with your phone line, simply call us at 320.524.2211 or 1.888.236.3574 and your message will be forwarded to an on-call technician. You may also attempt to troubleshoot your issue by referring to to the tips below!


I have no dial tone, is there anything I can try?

  • Check the phone cord to make sure it is plugged in securely to the wall.

  • Make sure none of your phones are off the hook.

  • If you have a cordless phone, answering machine, fax machine, satellite dish or computer, try unplugging them from the wall jack. Sometimes these digital devices will break and cause all of your phones to go dead. 

  • Plug a known working, corded phone into the jack. If your phone works, plug each phone back in one at a time to find out which one is broken.

  • If you have a second line, check to see if it has dial-tone. If both lines are out, the problem may be outside of your home/business.

What should I do if there is a lot of static or noise on my phone line?

  • If you have a cordless phone, answering machine, fax machine, satellite dish or computer, try unplugging them from the wall jack. Sometimes these digital devices will break and cause noise on your line. If the noise disappears, try plugging in the devices one at a time to find which one is broken.

  • If the noise happens whenever you move your phone cord or handset, the cord may be damaged. Replace the cord and check again for the noise.

Why am I hearing other people's conversations when I'm on my phone?

  • Sometimes you may hear crosstalk if a neighbor has a similar cordless phone. If you have a cordless phone, try switching to a known working, corded phone. 

  • Pick up a different phone in your house to see if you hear the other conversation on that phone. This will help us troubleshoot the problem much faster.

Troubleshooting Calling Features


My optional calling feature (voicemail, call waiting, caller id, etc...) doesn't work, why not?

  • These optional features need to be added to your line by a Gardonville customer service representative. You can make sure the feature is on your line by calling Gardonville at 320.524.2211 or 1.888.236.3574.

  • Check the instructions (located in the front pages of your Vikingland Regional Telephone Directory) to make sure you have the most current instructions.
